1946

In 1946, Achiel Oosterlinck opened a small bicycle shop in Zwevezele. What began with repairs grew into a story of three generations of craftsmanship. Today, at Achielle, we build bicycles that proudly carry his name. Peter and Tom continue the family story together with their father Jan and a small team of loyal craftsmen.

Much of our inspiration comes from bicycles from the early twentieth century: timeless lines, steel frames, and a distinctly classic look. We combine that heritage with modern components, contemporary finishes, and the comfort you expect from a bicycle today.

What makes Achielle unique is that our steel frames are still made in our own workshop. From tube to finished bicycle, everything happens under one roof in Egem, near Pittem.

The story began early in Achiel’s workshop. He built many of his bicycles himself, including the frames. Because he became known for his craftsmanship, he also started building frames for fellow bicycle makers. In 1963, he founded Dija, a company specialised in bicycle frames.
Later, his son Jan joined the business. In 1976, the company moved to its current location in Pittem/Egem. In 1986, Oostcolor paintworks was established there as well. Both companies later grew together into Dija-Oostcolor. When European frame production came under increasing pressure, we chose a new direction in 2007. Instead of only building frames for other brands, we launched our own bicycle brand. As a tribute to our grandfather, it was named Achielle.

Why does Achielle call itself a truly local bicycle?

“Made in Europe” can mean many things. Sometimes it only refers to final assembly. At Achielle, it goes much further than that. We still build our steel frames ourselves, one by one, in our own workshop in Egem. It is not the easiest path, but it is the one we believe in.

Three generations of experience, traditional craftsmanship, and modern machinery come together here. This allows us to manufacture, inspect, paint, and finish the heart of every Achielle—the frame—ourselves.

We are equally selective when it comes to the final build. Whenever possible, we work with strong European brands and suppliers such as Brooks England, Busch & Müller, AXA, Ergotec, Spanninga and Steco.

An Achielle is therefore not simply “Made in Europe”, but “Made, built and assembled in Europe”. From tube to bicycle, entirely in our own workshop.

This approach has also been recognized over the years. In 2013, Achielle was one of the first five companies to be awarded UNIZO’s “Handmade in Belgium” label. In addition, we were named “Creative Entrepreneur of the Year” in 2011, “Artisan of the Year” in 2012, and won the “Trends Business Tour” in 2014. In 2025, we received another prestigious honor: Achielle won the “Product Made in West Flanders” competition. This is a testament to what we’ve been striving to do since 1946: building bicycles that are truly our own.

         How an Achielle Is Made

Every Achielle is made to order. First, you choose your model, then you customise your bicycle step by step. The colour of the frame, mudguards or rims, the type of gears, brakes, tyres, saddle, lighting, and even details such as the chain — you decide how your Achielle looks and rides. Through our configurator, you can already explore all the possibilities. Afterwards, our dealers will gladly help you make the right choices and discuss every detail.

Once your bicycle has been ordered, work begins in our workshop. From cutting tubes and building the frame to painting and complete assembly: your Achielle is built especially for you. A few weeks later, your bicycle is ready at your dealer.
